CPSC Reports Holiday Decoration Injuries on the Rise
Just in time for the Christmas season, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported that holiday decorating accident injuries have seen a rise over the last several years. According to the report, injuries related to holiday decorations caused 13,000 injured victims to be treated in emergency rooms across the country in 2010. This is an increase from the 12,000 seen in 2008 and 2009, as well as the 10,000 in 2007.
These injuries occur from both the act of decorating and the hazards caused by decorations for the holiday season. Some of the most common injury accidents include:
- Falling from ladders while stringing lights;
- Lacerations caused by broken glass ornaments and other decorations; and
- Burn injuries caused by Christmas tree or candle fires, as well as fireplace injuries.
Many of these injuries can happen because of other circumstances year-round, but the December holiday season presents many more chances for such an accident to occur. The CPSC also reports that Christmas tree fires alone resulted in an average of four deaths and $18 million of property damage per year between 2006 and 2008. In addition, candle fires caused 130 deaths and $360 million in property damage total from 2006 to 2008.
Christmas is a time for celebration and charity, but the occurrence of a holiday injury can ruin any occasion. As such, it is important to practice safety and protect yourself and your family from any dangerous mishaps.
